Indian handset manufacturer Xolo has taken the lead in ushering chipset giant Intel into the smartphone market, with their 1.6Ghz Atom processor providing the grunt for the new x900 handset. The x900 should be landing in retail outlets in India in the next few days.
The x900 ships with Android - currently Gingerbread - but Ice Cream Sandwich should be roling out over the air before too long.
While there's no news of when / if this device might come to UK shores, it will surely pave the way for other manufacturers to look seriously into using Atom chips. ARM and Qualcomm have dominated the smartphone market for a long time (with admitedly excellent technology) but there's nothing like a bit of competition to ramp up the innovation a notch or two.
According to Intel and Xolo, the Atom chips deliver excellent battery life, and with multi-threading under the hood, have plenty of grunt too.
