Prerequisites

Delegates should have some experience with web app testing, and ideally some exposure to a web development language such as JavaScript. We're happy to preface this workshop with a primer / refresher on JavaScript and / or TypeScript - please let us know if you have any questions.

Session 1: Introduction and Setup

Hands-On Exercise:

Session 2: Basics of Writing and Running Tests

1. Writing Tests

• Introduction to TypeScript syntax for Playwright
• Creating and running a basic Playwright test
• Understanding the structure and components of a Playwright test
• Common Playwright functions and assertions

2. Using Codegen to Create Tests in the UI

• Introduction to Playwright's codegen tool
• Recording user actions to generate test scripts
• Modifying and customizing generated code
• Best practices for using codegen

Hands-On Exercise:
Write a basic test, use codegen to create tests, and modify the generated code.

Session 3: Advanced Test Management

1. Hooks: ‘beforeEach’ and ‘afterEach’

• Introduction to hooks in Playwright
• Using `beforeEach` to set up test preconditions
• Using `afterEach` to clean up after tests
• Practical examples and best practices

2. Parameterization

• Writing flexible and reusable tests with parameterization
• Using external data sources for test parameters
• Implementing parameterized tests in Playwright

Hands-On Exercise:
Implement ‘beforeEach’ and ‘afterEach’ hooks, create parameterized tests with external data.

Session 4: Running, Debugging, and Integrating Tests

• Debugging Playwright tests using VSCode
• Troubleshooting common issues

2. Test Reports

• Configuring Playwright to generate test reports
• Types of reports (HTML, JSON, etc.)
• Interpreting and using test report data
• Integrating test reports with other tools

3. CI/CD Integration

• Overview of CI/CD concepts
• Setting up a CI/CD pipeline with popular tools (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins)
• Running Playwright tests in CI/CD environments
• Handling environment-specific configurations and secrets

4. Wrap-Up and Q&A

• Recap key points from the day
• Additional resources for learning

Hands-On Exercise:
