About the course
Tableau is a powerful and intuitive data visualization and business intelligence tool that empowers users to quickly connect to diverse data sources, visually explore their data, and create interactive dashboards to discover and share insights. Its drag-and-drop interface makes complex data analysis accessible, enabling users to turn raw data into meaningful visual stories without requiring extensive technical expertise. This 2-day intensive hands-on training course provides a comprehensive introduction to Tableau Desktop, equipping participants with the foundational skills needed to confidently navigate the interface, connect to various data sources, perform essential data exploration and preparation tasks, and build impactful visualisations and interactive dashboards.
The course begins by introducing the Tableau ecosystem and helping participants become familiar with the Tableau Desktop environment. Participants will learn the key steps involved in the analytical process using Tableau, starting with how to connect to different types of data sources (including connecting to live data), understanding essential data preparation techniques within Tableau (such as splitting fields), and learning how to create reusable data sources and the considerations for sharing them and the impact of underlying data changes. A significant portion of the training is dedicated to exploring and organising data effectively within Tableau, covering crucial techniques such as filtering data based on dimensions, measures, and dates, sorting data for clear presentation, understanding and creating Groups and Hierarchies to structure data logically, and working effectively with various representations of Time data (discrete vs. continuous, creating custom dates).
Building upon data preparation and exploration skills, the course guides participants through creating a variety of standard and advanced visualisations and reports in Tableau. This includes techniques for analysing multiple measures in the same chart using Measure Values and Measure Names, creating charts with multiple measures sharing the same axis or using dual axes with different chart types, building Scatter plots, producing clear tabular reports using Text Tables and adding insight with Highlight Tables, and visualising proportional data effectively with Pie Charts and Tree Maps. Participants will also learn to perform essential calculations using Calculated Fields (covering aggregations, strings, dates, and comparative calculations) and receive an introduction to Table Calculations and Quick Table Calculations. The course culminates in demonstrating how to combine analyses into interactive Dashboards and enhance their usability and narrative power with Dashboard Actions, empowering attendees to create and share insightful data stories that drive understanding and inform decisions.
Instructor-led online and in-house face-to-face options are available - as part of a wider customised training programme, or as a standalone workshop, on-site at your offices or at one of many flexible meeting spaces in the UK and around the World.
